REPEAT WINNERS IN PHOENIX GRAB EARLY ADVANTAGE IN 2005 STANDINGS

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., April 11, 2005-AHDRA traveled to Phoenix for the first West Coast-area appearance of the 2005 season on April 2nd and 3rd at the Screamin' Eagle Arizona Bike Week Nationals presented by Chandler and Arrowhead Harley-Davidson dealers.

Steve Stordeur of Goshen, OH, led off the action, flexing his nitro muscles early in the Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley Top Fuel category. Already the reigning champ, and leading off his season with a win in Florida, Stordeur was off the trailer in qualifying with a 6.608 at 211.89 mph. The opening pass was good enough to hold the #1 spot for the day against 20 riders competing for a spot in Sunday's show.

Stordeur cruised to the semis easily on Sunday where he ran his quickest lap of the meet (6.553) over a 6.747 from Canadian Ron Houniet.

On the other side, Tracy Kile of Hatfield, PA, had upset #2 qualifier Mike Romine in a race that brought a pair of "off the pace" scores from both. The 7.232 from Kile was good enough against Romine's 7.531 to get him to the finals against the champion, Stordeur.

Stordeur was out of the gate first with an .082 and rode to his second 2005 season win with a 6.580 at 210.70 mph over .113, 6.784 at 200 mph marks from #6 qualifier Kile.

In JIMS Pro Fuel, it was Chris Streeter of Cleveland, OH, coming out in qualifying with a 6.977 that would seal the #1 spot for him.

In Sunday's eliminations, Streeter never left the six-second zone and made the journey to the finals look nearly effortless, although he was paired with top contender Mike Lehman in the semis. Lehman's bike shut off early, thus ending what could have been a tight battle to the stripe.

#7 qualifier Patrick Fenderson suffered breakage in the opening round, thereby giving Scooter Rajkowsi a bye in the semis where simply breaking the beam would get him to the final round against Streeter.

Rajkowski was able to make his bye run, although a 9.166 indicated that the new 2005 machine would have to step up before the final round.

Rajkowski and Streeter staged for the final, and it was all Streeter with an .067 tree followed by a 6.949 at 179.42 mph finish for the FBM racing team. Rajkowski was in trouble early, leaving him coasting to a 15.881 and giving Streeter his second win of the season.

In Pro Modified action, Champion Junior Pippin of Conyers, GA, came out with the best lap in opening round of qualifying (8.493), but Doug Ainsworth answered in the second round with an 8.420 to take over the lead spot. Pippin improved his final qualifying pass, but it wasn't enough to beat the earlier marks from Ainsworth of Vancouver, CA.

Ainsworth led off eliminations with a bye while Pippin ended up with a free ride himself after Greg Krenik broke. An upset followed for Ainsworth when he lit the red eye against Oregon's Randy Borho. Meanwhile, Pippin advanced over Shaun Reno.

Borho ended up facing a former champ in the semis-Cliff Dwy of Madras, OR. Borho ended his chances in a flash when he redlit.

A familiar pairing in the finals was set but was not destined to be, when Dwy's ride was reported broke. Pippin snagged the win, also his second of the season.

Another repeat offender was named in G-Square Street Pro competition. Asheville, NC's Travis Lummus claimed the #1 spot in qualifying with a second round 9.093 at 147.15 mph.

Lummus led eliminations off with a quicker 9.029 single before taking out Jeff King in the semis. On the other side, it was Champion Joe Sternotti from Blackwood, NJ (#2 qualifier) pairing up with Oregon's Steve Stute (#4 qualifier) who upset the champ with an .003 light followed by a 9.603 to the 9.760 from Sternotti.

Stute and Lummus squared off in the final and Stute was quick at the light again (.033), but the 10.050 that followed wasn't enough to beat a 9.434 from four-time champion Lummus.

In S & S Cycle Pro Stock, Dave Feazell of Hudson, IA, dominated qualifying early with a 7.518 in the opening round that he would later repeat to finish the day in the top spot.

He opened eliminations with a bye that would pair him with the #4 qualifier, Scott Pollacheck, in the second round. With the performance advantage, Feazell drew a rare red light, sending Pollacheck, of Medford, OR, to the final round.

On the other side of the Pro Stock ladder, #2 qualifier Dale Raudenbush of Old Zionsville, PA, drew Joe Sternotti (#7 qualifier) in opening round. Sternotti, competing in three classes during the weekend, pointed out earlier that his Pro Stock program needs a little work. That could be true, but Raudenbush made it easy for him by leaving early for the red light and advancing Sternotti to the semis against Rick Maney.

Maney, a Phoenix local, also noted that he was struggling a bit in qualifying, finishing in the #3 spot. Overcoming the struggle enough, he got to the finals where he took the win with a 7.683 to an 8.297 from Pollacheck.

A pair of 7.515 marks from John Breckenridge and Phil Schmidt resulted in an MPH tiebreaker for the top qualifier position in Kresto Pro Drag. Both riders scored the identical marks in Saturday's final round, leaving Breckenridge with the #1 spot as a result of the faster mph.

Breckenridge, of Sultan, WA, cruised through to the finals to face Willie Herschberger of Bradenton, FL. Herschberger, the #3 qualifier and newcomer to the nitro category, upset Schmidt, of Orangevale, CA, in the semis, sending him to the final against Breckenridge.

A potential side-by-side finish ended immediately when Herschberger drew a red light, handing Breckenridge the win light.

Rocklin, CA's Matt Guidera was the #1 qualifier in S & S Cycle Pro Gas and that pole position got him a bye in Sunday's opening round. His .006 reaction followed by a 7.639 (low E.T. of the meet) in the semis got him to the finals against #2 qualifier Mike Lozano.

Lozano, of San Antonio, TX, received a gift when Guidera was reported broke and unable to make the call. Lozano took it easy on the final lap and coasted to the win on a single.

Texan John Burdynski and Ohio's Mike Roberts battled for pole position in Drag Masters Hot Street action, and a third round 10.116 from Roberts awarded him the top spot for Sunday eliminations. He met up with Burdynski in the semis where a quicker .043 light (10.429) from Burdynski, the reigning champ, was all it took for the holeshot win after a slower reaction .159 from Roberts (10.377).

Burdynski beat the #3 qualifier, Dan Norlin of Aurora, CO, in the final for his second win of the season.

Burdynski also came away with a win in the S & S Super Sport 10.30 index competition with a win over Mike Fitzgerald of Moore, SC.

Multiple class rider Joe Sternotti came up short in Street Pro and Pro Stock performances in Phoenix, but made up the difference in the new S & S 124 Challenge class.

He reset the 3-week-old records in Phoenix with 9.970 at 136.26 mph in the ¼ mile and 6.623 at 111.15mph in the eighth.

Sternotti met Rod Cavanaugh (#2 qualifier) in the final to end his record-setting weekend with a 10.064 win light over an 11.420 from California native Cavanaugh.

Jamie McNaughton scored the #1 qualifying spot, a trio of records, and the win in Screamin' Eagle V-Rod. He did it by beating the best in the class, including #2 plateholder Terry "Vicious" Vaughn in the semis and the champion, Tripp Nobles, in the final.

McNaughton, of Milwaukee, WI, scored record marks over the weekend with 9.520 in the ¼ mile and 6.084 at 116.62 mph in the eighth.

Joe Boyd of Helendale, CA, beat Canton, OH's Dave Ostrowske for the Rucker Performance Super Gas win; meanwhile, Bill Lee Jr. of Ellenton, FL, was the winner over fellow Floridian Chuck Bothe in Performance Corner Super Eliminator action.

Lakeland, FL's Donnie Huffman scored the win in SEP competition over Eleanor Walker of Brandon, MS, despite her quicker .005 light.

Jody Davis of Mesa, AZ, was the Syn3 ET winner over Robert McConnell from Greenwood, LA.

Next up for the 2005 Screamin' Eagle Championship Series is the Rucker Performance Lone Star Nationals presented by Drag Specialties on April 23rd and 24th in Ennis, TX.
