Vancil Takes $5,000 purse home in JIMS Top Fuel: Lummus and Lozano set records in Phoenix!

Ron Houniet and Fast Lane Racing Abduct JIMS Top Fuel Win at Alien Nationals! Tom Bradford Makes It 3 in a row in Pro Stock

Winston Salem, N.C., April 17, 2002-The AHDRA returned to the home office in North Carolina after a two week sweep of the west coast. Competitors opened up the west Coast action April 6th & 7th at the Rivera-Primo Arizona Bike Week Nationals presented by Hacienda Harley-Davidson.

It was the 2nd appearance for the AHDRA at Firebird International Raceway, as fans were treated to the fastest Harley Drag racing on earth. Early numbers indicate spectator attendance was up 40% from AHDRA's 2001 event at Firebird.

It was the Vance & Hines/Drag Specialties team taking the JIMS Top Fuel winnings in a battle to the finish with Hell Racing's, Dave O'Hara. Doug Vancil soared to the 1/4 mile win with a 6.821 at 198.09 miles per hour to O'Hara's 7.210 at 192.58 miles per hour.

In Pro Fuel, reigning Champion, Tim Kerrigan was off the pace and out early as Chris Streeter advanced to the finals for the win. Tom Bradford and the S & S/Hal's H-D team scored a 2nd win in Pro Stock action and it was a father/son celebration when John McMillin took top honors in Pro Drag competition and son, Jacob won the Junior Senior competition.

No records were expected at the Phoenix event, but Mike Lozano and Travis Lummus pulled off a pair of records each. Lozano recorded an 8.488 1/4 mile ET record and a 5.319 for the 1/8th mile record. Spyke Street Pro Champion, Lummus, scored another one for the books with a 9.543 1/4-mile record and a 6.138 for the 1/8th mile record.

Off the track "Kodak moments" included the arrival of the Iron Horse Memorial ride, stretching nearly 16 miles down the Maricopa Highway entrance to Firebird Int'l Raceway. The ride, which started at Hacienda Harley-Davidson, is a charity benefiting the families of fallen officers. Hacienda Harley-Davidson was also the location of the official "AHDRA Kick Start Party" which brought out over 7,000 visitors to the dealership for live entertainment, The Miss Arizona Bike Week contest and AHDRA drag bike displays.

AHDRA riders and staff headed to Roswell, New Mexico following the Phoenix action for the inaugural appearance at Roswell Dragway. The Champion Harley-Davidson Alien Nationals presented by Screamin' Eagle Performance Parts got a jump start Friday, April 12, as Champion Harley-Davidson welcomed riders and fans with a Kick Start party, complete with free food and beverages!

After riders and AHDRA officials determined track conditions in the shut off area were marginal, Pro racing was reduced to the 1/8th mile.

It was Canadian, Ron Houniet's Fast Lane racing team conquering the conditions and 1/8th mile action when Houniet took the JIMS Top Fuel win with a 4.691 at 160.69 miles per hour over Arizona's, Jack Romine's, 5.104 at 115.59 miles per hour.

Red Line Oil's, Tim Kerrigan said, "It feels good to be back", when he took the win in Pro Fuel with a 4.972 at 151.45 miles per hour. Kerrigan, the current champion scrambled to replace a motor into the wee hours Saturday morning, and credited his team for their hard work in getting his machine prepped for the win.

Tom Bradford made in 3 in a row in Pro Stock wins after also electing to change out the motor before the Roswell competition. Steve Dorn and the "Black Attack" team scored their first win in Pro Drag competition after upsetting John McMillin of South Beach, O.R. and Cliff Dwy of Madras, O.R. won big in Joker Machine Pro Modified after defeating record holder, Mike Lozano of San Antonio, TX. Andrew's ET Champion, Kim Swank was back in force, taking the win in the highly competitive ET bracket racing class.
