VANCIL WINS TOP PRIZE IN VEGAS AND RAY PRICE SETS NEW AHDRA SPEED RECORD AT THE SCREAMIN' EAGLE PERFORMANCE PARTS LAS VEGAS SPRING NATIONALS, May 4th and 5th
Winston-Salem, NC, May 6, 2003 - The Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley competition was fierce at The Strip after Saturday's qualifying left ten out of seventeen riders in the six-second zone.
|
Doug Vancil (Albuquerque, NM) entered Sunday's eliminations in the number one spot with
a 6.649 at 193.07 mph. Vancil's six-second consistency drove him to the finals to face
AHDRA Top Fuel Champion Ron Houniet (Maple Ridge, B.C.) for the tightest quarter-mile battle of the weekend. Houniet came off the line with a .473 reaction time and finished with a personal best of 6.655 at 193.07 mph running side-by-side with Vancil, whose .473 and 6.649 at 193.07 mph landed the two-time IHRA champion in the winners' circle.

Ray Price (Raleigh, NC) started the day with a new 216.06 mph record in Saturday's qualifying. #4 qualifier Price bettered the mph on his opening run in eliminations with a blistering 6.487 at 218.41 mph, but he would not get to back it up. He was unable to stop his 850 horse-powered machine, which caused him to run off the top end and into the sand trap. Transported to a local trauma center, Price was treated for a broken wrist, road rash, and possible nerve injuries in his shoulder. At last report, arrangements were being made for his return to North Carolina for continued treatment. Price's 6.487 was the low E.T. of the weekend, and his 218.41 was the event's top speed.

Chris Streeter (Cleveland, OH) drove forty-five hours to compete in the JIMS Pro Fuel competition and was rewarded with a Vegas victory. Streeter, the #2 qualifier, was set to face Scooter Rajkowski (Mesa, AZ) in the final, but problems for Rajkowski shut him off at the launch, handing Streeter the trophy with a 7.883 at 152.45 mph pass. Streeter took low E.T. honors with a 6.968 and top speed at 187.26 mph. Tim Kerrigan (Novato, CA) was the number one qualifier, but problems off the line sent the two-time Champion to the trailer early.
